Process
I start my creative process by figuring what story I want to tell and why I want to tell it. I then figure out the best point in the story to freeze and use in my composition. I start making the composition working in details from the beginning and end of the narrative to help the viewer understand the piece. I then transfer the composition to its medium and bring it to life, changing the composition as I go to have it make the most sense at the end.
The artists that influence me are well known printmakers such as Goya and Dürer. I am inspired by Goya for his use of texture, detail, and shading to make incredible intaglio pieces. Dürer’s intaglio pieces, although few, are full of detail for such a small plate. I am also inspired by music artists such as Madds Buckley, whose music is full of narrative I relate to. Art history also influences my art greatly, time periods such as High Classical Greece, the mid to late medieval period, and the Baroque period. The high classical era is full of such clean and polished art that still influences the world today. I am drawn to the illuminations in the mid to late medieval period, with the content and colors being huge inspiration for some of by boarders. The excessive decoration of the Baroque period is what I draw from when I think of adding detail to my compositions.
